Can we reverse immune cell 'exhaustion' in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia?
Express your interest to be a consumer partner
involvement@qimrb.edu.auDr Yong Sheng and Professor Fabienne Mackay are looking for consumer partners to join their team and contribute in many ways to this research.
This project aims to uncover how chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) weakens the immune cells vital for fighting cancer (T cells) and causing them to lose their ability to function.
This research will explore how the cancer deprives the blood of essential nutrients and/or sends signals to shut down gene activity, leaving the T cells too exhausted to mount an effective defense against CLL. Understanding these influences will allow them to pinpoint the exact drivers of T cell exhaustion and test innovative approaches to restore their function.
This work has the potential to transform how we treat CLL offering hope for better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.
Why get involved?
- Help us to ensure we prioritise the needs of patients in this research
- Gain awareness of the medical research process
- Ensure that important research findings will be shared well with the community
- Meet and work with an amazing group of researchers that want to make a difference
Who are we looking for?
- 1-3 consumers with lived-experience of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), as a patient or carer
- Individuals who are happy to share their story, give feedback on project direction for grant applications, and help to translate the findings to the community.
What is involved?
- Firstly researchers would like to meet with you for about 1-hour in early-April to share more details about the research and collect your feedback to assist with preparations for a grant application due in April. This meeting can be held at QIMR Berghofer on the phone, or online via zoom.
- If the grant is successful, there will be more opportunities to be involved as the project progresses
Thank you
Reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed (on request) and we are able to offer an optional $50 payment as a thank you for your time and contribution.
