Our brand
Our name
In 2013, Clive Berghofer AM donated $50.1 million to the then Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR).
At the time, this was the largest single philanthropic donation by an Australian, and was preceded by a gift of $10 million he had already made to the Institute.
In recognition of Mr Berghofer’s long history of support, QIMR changed its name to QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. (From 2025 it will be known as QIMR Berghofer).
These donations have been immensely valuable to the Institute, which is conducting crucial research into cancer, infectious diseases, mental illness, and many other conditions. Funding received from Mr Berghofer ensures QIMR Berghofer can continue to invest in the latest equipment, perform clinical trials in new cancer treatments and maintain our state-of-the-art facilities to attract the brightest scientific minds from around the world.
Today, more scientists, from both Australia and overseas, choose to further their career at QIMR Berghofer and bring with them substantial grant funding that the Institute would not otherwise have realised.
None of this would have been possible without Mr Berghofer’s vision and continued support.
Logo
Our logo consists of four cells that group to form a soft hexagon shape. The symbol represents the unique partnership of our four key research areas, Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Brain and Mental Health and Population Health and is a nod to our past hexagonal logo.
The pathways formed in the negative space show the collaborative linking of these areas and the formation of the cells into a single hexagon represents the culmination of research within a single institution – QIMR Berghofer.
The logo is based on a voronoi diagram, the partitioning of a plane into regions based on the distance to a specific set of points. It is used in biology to model the growth patterns of cells.
A colour palette inspired by Queensland
Keeping maroon as the key colour, our logo stays true to the Institute’s Queensland roots.
Our brand then bursts with a modern, bright supporting palette inspired by Queensland landscapes and lifestyle – think the reef, the rainforest, our beaches and our brilliant sky.
