Prestigious NHMRC Investigator Grants awarded to seven QIMR Berghofer scientists

QIMR Berghofer has been awarded seven National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grants, that will help drive vital research in the areas of malaria, cancer and genomics, lupus and mental health.

The Investigator Grant scheme is the NHMRC’s largest funding scheme which awards around $370 million in research funding each year to support emerging and established leaders in health and medical research.

The grants are highly contested, providing a 5-year fellowship and research support for outstanding researchers at all career stages.

Congratulations to the following QIMR Berghofer researchers and their teams.

Dr Nicola Waddell (Medical Genomics)

Leveraging genomics to unravel tumour complexity and improve patient outcomes.

Associate Professor Bridget Barber (Clinical Malaria group)

Malaria volunteer infection studies for the advancement of antimalarial therapeutics.

Associate Professor Juliet French (Functional Genetics Laboratory)

Cancer and the dark genome.

Professor Fabienne Mackay (B-lymphocytes in Autoimmunity & Malignancies)

Breakthrough research paving the way for the development of transformative immunotherapies for Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Dr Brittany Mitchell (Psychiatric Genetics)\

Understanding the genetic basis of treatment response for depression.

Jue Sheng Ong (Statistical Genetics)

Expanding genetic causal inference analyses to evaluate cancer risk factors in diverse populations.

Dr Lachlan Harris (Sid Faithfull Brain Cancer Laboratory)

Prolonging survival in glioblastoma through targeting of quiescent glioma stem cells.
